The Coturnix Quail, also known as the Japanese Quail, is a popular domestic quail breed valued for its compact size, hardy nature, and excellent productivity. Originally domesticated in Asia, Coturnix Quail are now widely kept by hobbyists and smallholders for both egg production and ornamental purposes.
Coturnix Quail are small ground-dwelling birds with rounded bodies, soft feathering, and an active but generally calm temperament. Their manageable size makes them particularly well suited to smaller gardens, aviaries, and dedicated quail housing where space may be limited. They are fast maturing birds that adapt well to a range of environments when provided with suitable care and secure accommodation.
Our Coturnix Quail are supplied as juveniles around 4 weeks old, making them a great option for keepers who would like to rear young birds beyond the brooding stage while still watching them mature and develop. At this age the birds are becoming stronger and more independent, with feathering well developed and natural colouring beginning to show more clearly.
Coturnix Quail are highly regarded for their productive qualities, with hens later developing into reliable layers of small speckled eggs. Their quick growth rate and efficient feed conversion make them one of the most practical and rewarding quail breeds to keep for both beginners and experienced poultry keepers.
At Ridgeway Poultry we specialise in carefully selected, high-quality poultry, with a particular focus on producing healthy, well-reared birds across a wide range of breeds and varieties. Each bird is raised with care to ensure it develops into a strong, healthy adult.
Juvenile quail require secure predator-proof housing with dry bedding, shelter from drafts and damp conditions, and access to suitable grower feed and fresh clean water at all times. As they continue to mature, they benefit from adequate ground space, enrichment, and safe areas for dust bathing and natural behaviour.
