The Pekin Chicken is a popular bantam breed, bred for its compact size, friendly nature, and charming, rounded appearance. Originally developed in Asia and later refined in Europe, Pekins have become a firm favourite among poultry keepers. Their soft feathers, feathered ‘trouser legs’, and low stance give them a distinctive, almost “ball-like” look that makes them comical in appearance.
Pekins are known for their calm and docile temperament, making them an excellent choice for families, beginners, or anyone looking for easy-to-handle birds. They are naturally friendly and often become very tame with regular interaction. Their smaller size also makes them well suited to smaller gardens or setups where space may be more limited.
Our Pekin hens are available in a beautiful range of colours. Gold Partridge birds feature rich golden tones with intricate dark patterning, while Birch offers a striking contrast of dark body feathers with lighter highlights. Lavender Pekins display a soft, pale grey-blue colouring that is particularly eye-catching. Mottled varieties are speckled with white tips across darker feathers, creating a unique spotted effect, while Millifleur birds showcase a stunning combination of rich chestnut tones, black markings, and white-tipped feathers.
All of our chickens are hens at point of lay, meaning they are close to beginning egg production. Pekins typically lay small, cream-coloured eggs and are not known for high output, but they are often kept for their temperament and ornamental appeal. They are also known to go broody, making them suitable for hatching eggs.
All of our chickens are hens at point of lay, meaning they are close to starting egg production. Polish chickens typically lay small to medium white eggs but are valued more for their ornamental qualities than high egg output.
At Ridgeway Poultry we specialise in carefully selected, high-quality birds, with a particular focus on producing healthy, well-socialised chickens in a variety of colours. Each bird is raised with care to ensure it arrives in excellent condition and ready to thrive in its new environment.
Chickens require secure housing, access to a suitable run or free-range space, and a balanced diet of quality layers feed, grit, and fresh water. Silkies, due to their feathering, are less suited to very wet or muddy conditions, so a dry, well-maintained environment is recommended to keep them in the best health.
