The Polish Chicken is an eye-catching, ornamental breed, instantly recognisable by its large, rounded crest of feathers that sits on its head like a Feather Afro. Despite the name, the exact origins of the breed are debated, with strong links to the Netherlands as well as historical references across Europe dating back several hundred years. Polish chickens have long been admired for their unique appearance and are now a favourite among poultry keepers looking to add something a little different to their flock.
Known for their lively and curious nature, Polish chickens are active birds with plenty of character. They are generally friendly once settled, although their impressive crest can sometimes limit vision, making them a little more nervous in new surroundings. With regular handling and a calm environment, they become confident and enjoyable birds to keep.
Our Polish hens are available in a stunning range of colour varieties. White Crested Black birds feature a dramatic contrast between their deep black bodies and bright white crests, while White Crested Blue offers a softer, slate-blue tone with the same striking headpiece. Splash varieties display a unique mix of white, grey, and blue patterning, making each bird slightly different. Black/Gold and Black/Lemon bring rich laced feather patterns with warm golden or pale lemon highlights, while Gold Chamois offers a lighter, more delicate buff brown appearance with patterned plumage.
All of our chickens are hens at point of lay, meaning they are close to starting egg production. Polish chickens typically lay small to medium white eggs but are valued more for their ornamental qualities than high egg output.
At Ridgeway Poultry we specialise in carefully selected, high-quality birds, with a particular focus on producing healthy, well-socialised chickens in a variety of colours. Each bird is raised with care to ensure it arrives in excellent condition and ready to thrive in its new environment.
Chickens require secure housing, access to a suitable run or free-range space, and a balanced diet of quality layers feed, grit, and fresh water. Silkies, due to their feathering, are less suited to very wet or muddy conditions, so a dry, well-maintained environment is recommended to keep them in the best health.
