The Silkie Chicken is one of the most distinctive and well-loved poultry breeds in the world, prized for its soft, fluffy plumage, gentle temperament, and unique appearance. Unlike typical chickens, Silkies have hair-like feathers that lack barbicels, giving them their signature “fur-like” look. Originating in Asia, most commonly associated with ancient China, this breed has been admired for centuries, with early accounts even noted by travellers such as Marco Polo. Today, Silkies are a popular choice for backyard keepers due to their friendly nature and unusual appearance.
Silkies are a smaller breed, known for their calm and docile personality, making them ideal for families, beginners, or those with limited space. Their interesting features include feathered legs, dark skin, and a rounded crest, giving them a unique appearance. They are particularly well known for their broody nature, often making excellent natural incubators for hatching eggs of other chickens, or even other species like Pheasants and Ducks!
Our Silkies are available in a selection of beautiful colours, including Black, White, Buff, and Buff Partridge. Black Silkies have a deep, rich colouring with a subtle sheen, while White Silkies offer a clean, bright appearance that stands out in any flock. Buff Silkies display warm golden colours, and Buff Partridge varieties combine this with delicate patterned feathering, adding extra visual interest.
All of our chickens are hens at point of lay, meaning they are ready to start producing eggs shortly after settling into their new home. Silkies typically lay small, tinted eggs and, while not prolific layers compared to many other breeds, they more than make up for it with their personality and charm.
At Ridgeway Poultry we specialise in carefully selected, high-quality birds, with a particular focus on producing healthy, well-socialised chickens in a variety of colours. Each bird is raised with care to ensure it arrives in excellent condition and ready to thrive in its new environment.
Chickens require secure housing, access to a suitable run or free-range space, and a balanced diet of quality layers feed, grit, and fresh water. Silkies, due to their feathering, are less suited to very wet or muddy conditions, so a dry, well-maintained environment is recommended to keep them in the best health.
